THE HUMAN GALLERY

by Katharina Thoma

About the Gallery...
The Human Gallery was born from a deep longing — not just for art, but for connection, honesty, and a sense of belonging. As an art student, I wandered through countless galleries, searching for something that truly moved me. While the walls were filled with skill and beauty, I often left galleries and exhibitions untouched. Nothing felt close. Nothing felt real. During my final year of university, I created my own project: sitting across from people, looking into their eyes for ten minutes, recording the moment. It led to my first exhibition — and my first glimpse of what it means to see someone truly.
This experience planted the seed for The Human Gallery — not a gallery of objects, but of people. A space where you’re not only witnessed but welcomed. Where there’s no need to perform, no pressure to fit in, no expectation to polish who you are..
Much of my inspiration also comes from my years as a social worker and freelancer, where I was constantly surrounded by perfectionism, filtered images, and curated lives. I saw how exhausting that world could be — and how much we crave places where we can drop the performance and just be.
The Human Gallery isn’t typical art.
This is a space of vulnerability and freedom. A place to be seen — fully, raw, and real.
